Your appliance’s coverage will typically last at least a full year, with a few exceptions. But regardless if it’s a Whirlpool manufacturer warranty, Samsung manufacturer warranty, or any other brand, knowing these 4 things about your warranty will save you time and money.

4 Facts About Your Manufacturer Warranty

 #1: Your Warranty Is Invalid Without The Purchase Receipt.

If you take away anything from this article, know how important it is to keep your receipt! The receipt is vital if you want to utilize your manufacturer warranty. Without a valid proof of purchase, it will be very difficult for your repair technician to receive payment from the manufacturer for the services he provided. As such, most appliance repair companies won’t touch your appliance if you can’t provide the proof of purchase (aka the receipt).

#2: Not All Repairs Are Covered.

This is why manufacturers often like to use the term “limited warranty” to describe their warranty program. The scope of covered repairs is usually limited to defects in manufacturing. For example, these situations are not covered by the LG manufacturer warranty:

• “Damage resulting from misuse, abuse, improper installation, repair, or maintenance”:  Unbalanced wash cycles and vibration issues with the dryer are commonly caused by improper installation. Your manufacturer warranty won’t cover the repair if this is found to be the case.
• “Repairs when your product is used in other than normal and usual household use…“: If your home appliance is being used for commercially (e.g. offices, recreational facilities, etc.), it won’t be covered.
• “Damage caused by transportation and handling, including scratches, dents, chips, and/or other damage to the finish of your product, unless such damage results from defects in materials or workmanship and is reported within one week of delivery”: Cosmetic repairs are typically only covered for a very limited time period.

These examples from LG’s manufacturer warranty are typical for most brands,  but check your owner’s manual to verify what your warranty covers.

#3: Some Components Have Extended Coverage.

While most appliances are typically covered by the 1-year limited warranty, certain components may be covered for much longer! For example, the KitchenAid manufacturer warranty offers a six-year protection on their refrigerator compressor, evaporator, and condenser for parts and labor, and up to 12 years on parts only. So make sure to check your owner’s manual to see what parts are covered prior to getting it repaired.

#4: Technician Works for an Independent Company.

It’s often assumed that your warranty repair technician is working for the manufacturer directly, but that’s usually not the case. Therefore, as a third party, they can’t authorize a replacement of your unit or grant extended coverage. Their job is to perform repairs that will get your appliance back up and running!
